Speaking to a crowd at Bingemans in Kitchener during his carnival-style FordFest two years ago, Ontario Premier Doug Ford promised to build affordable 1,600-square-foot houses across the province.
The houses would have finished basements that owners can rent out, backyards with fences, paved driveways, and would be built on land made available through partnerships with municipalities, Ford said.
All for a total of just $500,000.
“You can’t find a home for under $500,000 anywhere in this province, but as sure as I am standing here, we’re going to make that available to young people, people that are renting right now that have a dream of home ownership,” he said.
Two years later, it may be time to mourn the construction of the single detached house.
