Republican lawmakers are headed toward adopting a new congressional map that would give the GOP an advantage in all four of the state’s U.S. House districts, but gives the minority Democrats at least a fighting chance in one competitive district.
In a meeting Monday morning, the Legislative Redistricting Committee adopted a map that would create an east-west split of Salt Lake County. The full Legislature will now vote on the map.
Under the new map, Salt Lake City and the eastern portion of the county will go into a district that includes the northern portion of Utah County and eastern counties.
The western half of Salt Lake County would be combined with Tooele County.
