ST. LOUIS — The city assessor is urging homeowners who lost their homes in the May 16 tornado to apply for property tax relief.

An ordinance approved by aldermen this summer allows the assessor to prorate tax bills on storm-damaged homes to reflect how long they were occupied this year.

If a family lived in a house from Jan. 1 until the tornado struck, and it remained uninhabitable afterward, their tax bill could be cut by roughly two-thirds.

Since applications opened in August, the assessor’s office has received a few hundred submissions. But thousands of homes were severely damaged in the storm, officials noted.
