As the federal government shutdown entered its sixth day on Monday, Maryland Democratic Rep. Johnny Olszewski called on congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle to come back to the negotiating table.
Speaking to reporters outside his office in Towson, Olszewski criticized Speaker Mike Johnson for canceling scheduled votes in the House, leaving the Senate to once again vote on two competing proposals that have failed so far to garner the 60 votes necessary to pass.
“The best way to reopen this government is to actually talk to each other,” Olszewski said. “It’s my belief Republican and Democratic leaders should be in a room negotiating an end to this. Canceling votes and not talking to each other is not going to end this standoff.”
