Lethbridge’s first skate park has reached the end of its life.

The Dave Elton Skate Park is being decommissioned, after having opened 26 years ago in 1999.

G.M. of Parks and Cemeteries Blair Richter says they spent several months making this decision.

“When the decision was ultimately come to back in June, we informed the skateboarding community right away,” says Richter.

He says many of the park’s users were disappointed, but they understood.

Richter says the City has received several complaints about the park’s deteriorating condition and a general feeling that it is no longer safe.

Counting devices had been installed earlier this year to see how many people were using the site, and according to Richter, those numbers were down significantly.
