Erie Otters star defenseman and the number one overall pick in the 2025 NHL draft, Matthew Schaefer, has made the New York Islanders' opening night roster.

Schaefer and the Islanders open their 2025-26 NHL regular season Thursday night at the Penguins at 7 pm.

Schaefer appeared in 17 games last season with Erie due to a shoulder injury.
