IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Moves to close the State Historical Society’s building in Iowa City continue, with items being packed up for a move to Des Moines now underway.

A truck showed up Monday morning at the back of the Centennial building in Iowa City to start taking the local collections to Des Moines. It comes just days after a group of advocates filed a lawsuit hoping to keep the building open.

Behind the doors of the Centennial building in Iowa City is centuries of local history. Monday morning, some of that history was loaded into a truck to be moved to Des Moines.

“My church’s records are here, dating back to 1857,” said David McCartney.

McCartney is a retired archivist and is a member of the Congregational Church of Iowa City.
