LANESBORO, Minn.-The City of Lanesboro is considering ecological and accessibility improvements to the Root River waterfront spanning 3,200 feet from the Lanesboro Dam to the downtown area.

Minnesota Trout Unlimited is a nonprofit that is helping the city design the project using $300,000 in grant funding from a state Outdoor Heritage Fund.

Jennifer Biederman, habitat director for the nonprofit, says the current plans are estimated to cost somewhere between $300,000 to $400,000.

That money would support the creation of new shallow areas along the river for trout to breed in and the creation of new flood plains that would help relieve pressure when the water level rises from heavy rains.

She says those flood plains would also double as new fishing space for local anglers.
