The federal judge who has temporarily halted President Trump’s attempts to put National Guard troops on Portland streets is known for being fair and apolitical, say multiple people who worked with her over the years in Oregon.

U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut was thrust into the international spotlight this week after issuing two orders that bar any National Guard members from being relocated from any state for federal service in Oregon.

Immergut outright rejected the federal government’s assertion that Portland faced a “danger of rebellion” and that “regular forces” were unable to execute federal law as protests continue outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building.
