LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A 12-year-old boy died days after he was hit by a suspected DUI driver while walking to school, the family confirmed to 8 News Now on Monday.

On Friday just before 7:40 a.m., officers responded to the area near 21st Street and Owens Avenue, near Rancho High School in the east valley after a report of a crash involving a child.

A 12-year-old was crossing the street on his way to school when he was struck. According to Deputy Chief Jose Hernandez with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the boy had only taken a few steps off the sidewalk when he was struck in a school zone. The crash occurred when the driver failed to yield to the boy, police said.
