A man was hit in the head with a rock and slashed on the arm during an alleged attempted invasion in northern NSW.

Five boys allegedly kicked the front door of a home on Boland Dr in Moree just before 3.20am on Saturday and were confronted by a 56-year-old man who lived there.

A fight broke out between the man and the boys during which the victim was allegedly hit in the head with a rock and was slashed with a knife on his left forearm.

Police say a witness jumped in to stop the fight and the boys ran off.
