BURBANK, Calif. —

A shortage of air traffic controllers appeared to be causing delays at Hollywood Burbank Airport on Monday.

The Los Angeles-area airport was expected to be unstaffed with air traffic controllers because of sick calls, last-minute day-off requests and other staffing issues, NBCLA reported , citing controllers at the airport. The station reported that the airport had planned to hand off duties to Southern California TRACON. Air traffic controllers told NBCLA the shortage was not due to the federal government shutdown.

Air traffic controllers are required to show up during a government shutdown and work without pay. But in previous shutdowns, staffing shortages as workers called out have led to flight and security screening delays.
