DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Tonight's full October moon is called the Harvest Moon. The term comes from traditional agricultural practices and the timing of the full moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. Historically, this full moon is called harvest because it provided extra moonlight during the evenings, helping farmers to harvest their crops more efficiently before the onset of colder weather.

It also coincides with the moon 's closest approach to Earth in its 27-day orbit, giving rise to a spectacular supermoon , which will appear subtly larger and brighter than usual. This will be the first of three supermoons to end 2025. The next will occur on November 5th- the Beaver Moon.
