(FOX40.COM) -- Jesuit High School announced plans to welcome its first cohort of female students. In 2027, the formerly all-boys school will become California's only co-divisional high school.

The Carmichael school has operated as an all-boys institution for more than 60 years, so it's important to clarify that this change does not mean boys and girls will be learning in classrooms together.

There will be a girls division and a boys division, so boys and girls will still learn in separate classrooms. However, this transition will create opportunities for the genders to join together for service, athletics, arts and leadership.

Jesuit High School President Chris Alling said there's a deeper reason behind this historic decision.
