PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence City Council Committee on Ordinances approved amendments to a 2017 ordinance Monday night in response to increased federal immigration enforcement.
The amendments were advanced to the full Providence City Council with a recommendation to pass.
The Community-Police Relations Act was signed into law eight years ago under then-Mayor Jorge Elorza.
The ordinance already prohibits Providence police from inquiring about an individual’s immigration status and overall, puts limits on how much police can cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
The amendments include the following: • Expanding types of prohibited contact between Providence police and federal immigration authorities; • Clarifying prohibited collaboration with federal authorities
