River otters, manatees, sea turtles, penguins, and a giant Pacific octopus are among hundreds of marine animals relocating 14 miles inland as Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida moves to its new campus in Lakewood Ranch.

The new Mote Science Education Aquarium features over 1 million gallons of living ocean exhibits, cutting-edge STEM labs, and immersive learning spaces.

It’s designed to expand marine science education, public engagement, and conservation.

Animal transfers began in August, involving specialized containers that maintain temperature, oxygen, and water quality.

Upon arrival, Mote’s aquarists and veterinary staff oversee acclimation, following strict protocols from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Mote also operates coral nurseries in the Florida Keys, restoring damaged reefs. Founded in 1955 by Dr. Eugenie Clark, Mote now spans nine campuses from Tampa Bay to Key West.

The new facility is set to open to the public on Wednesday.
