The first No Kings Day rally was held on Feb. 17, as a protest against President Donald Trump’s policies and actions, rejecting the idea of authoritarian leadership. The next No Kings Day will take place Oct. 18, when many rallies across the nation will be held to reaffirm a fundamental truth that, in these United States of America, power resides not in the throne of a monarch, but in the hands of the people.

A would-be king or nationalist might cling to the trappings of power, but a true leader yearns for our nation to embody it highest ideals. Nationalism can lead us down a path of self-aggrandizement where we become consumed by resentment and blinded to the world’s realities.

But a true leader demands more of us. It is a call to strive for greatness, not comparing ourselves to others
