The Supreme Court today cleared the appointments of vice-chancellors (VCs) of eight universities in West Bengal, following a hearing today by a Division Bench of the apex court.
Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi asked the state to start the process of appointing the VCs to the universities, which include Calcutta University, where there were no nominations either from the state or the Governor, in his capacity as Chancellor, for the post of VCs after vetting the recommendations made by the Supreme Court-appointed committee led by former Justice UU Lalit. The committee was entrusted with the job of assessing the list of names as suggested by both the state and the Governor.
