Police say the suspects involved in a "violent confrontation" which resulted in the death of a man on the NSW far south coast are still at large.

A second man was hospitalised following the fight between a number of people, one of whom was carrying a chainsaw.

However, South Coast Police District Chief Inspector Shane Jessep said the 43-year-old man whose body was found in a park at East Street in Bega about 2am on Monday is believed to have been stabbed.

"It appears the deceased has suffered a number of stab wounds, as well as the male that is still undergoing treatment," Inspector Jessep said.

Authorities confirmed a chainsaw was produced during the incident, but it did not wound anyone involved.
