Melbourne, Oct 07: Nearly 100,000 deaths in 2023’s unprecedented heatwaves were linked to human-induced climate change, according to a global study by Australian researchers.

The study estimated 178,486 excess deaths worldwide, with 54% (about 97,000) attributable to climate change. These heatwaves coincided with the hottest year on record, 1.45 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, significantly impacting subtropical and temperate zones, where extreme temperatures worsened health conditions.
