On Sunday morning, Dane Gagai stood next to the number one field at the Tamworth Minor League grounds and met with throngs of fans.

The Newcastle Knights' back has always been a popular figure within the sport, and it was easy to see why. Although his Boomerang Sports Club side had just lost a hard-fought meeting with eventual champions the Newcastle Yowies in round two of the Koori Knockout, his demeanour didn't show it.

Gagai happily shook dozens of hands, signed countless hats and shirts, and posed for photos with fans young and old.

"It was disappointing [to lose], but that's knockout footy," he said.

"I'm just grateful to be a part of the 'Rangs again this year, and I'm definitely looking forward to coming back next year. In the meantime, I'll just enjoy the moment with my famil
