Police have set up a cordon near cane fields south of Mackay in north Queensland after a man was shot in the hip this afternoon.

Queensland Ambulance Service said the man, aged in his 40s, was taken to Mackay Base Hospital around 3pm after the shooting on a farm at Homebush.

A hospital spokesperson said the man was in a stable condition and being treated in the emergency department.

A police command post has been set up at the intersection of Homebush Road and Palm Tree Creek Road, with locals not allowed to return to their farming properties.

Police have used a drone as part of the response, with five police cars and ambulances also parked near a farmhouse.

Police have been contacted for comment.
