Several people have been arrested during a police operation, where bullets were fired into two cars during peak hour traffic in Sydney's south-west.

Tactical operations officers conducted a "high risk" arrest on River Road, Revesby about 5pm on Tuesday.

Images from the scene showed a Mitsubishi SUV riddled with bullet holes in the front and rear windshields.

The footage also showed a Mercedes located further along the same road with bullet holes in the windshield and the side windows smashed.

Witnesses reported sounds of gunfire as police swarmed the car.

Phone footage from one of the scenes appeared to show multiple officers with their guns drawn as they pinned a man to the ground in the middle of the busy road.
