When I was younger, I used to be glued to a world map trying to figure out where the seas and their boundaries were. The reason simply being to know where exactly my father’s ship is sailing. But for me, it all looked like one vast sweep of blue, no lines, no rules and, most importantly, no divides. As I grew older, I realised things are not as plain as a map often shows. The question of whether there is a wall separating oceans and how you know if you have crossed boundaries when in the middle of the sea used to intrigue me. Slowly, I realised the answer to all my questions lies in maritime boundaries.
Maritime boundaries are the division of any water body according to international laws, indicating the sovereign rights and jurisdictional limits of coastal states over marine areas. With
