Tuesday morning across northeastern Illinois was filled with rain, heavy downpours and lightning as chilly, fall-like weather moves in over the next few days.
In the overnight hours at times, some parts could see temperatures drop down into the upper 30s, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.
As of 5:30 a.m., rain was blanketing nearly the entire Chicago area. Some of the heaviest rain was in far southern Cook County, along with Will and Grundy Counties in Illinois and parts of northwest Indiana, live weather radar showed.
Earlier Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service posted on X that a "heavy" thunderstorm near Midway Airport led to visibility below one mile, with "torrential downpours, along with the occasional cloud-to-ground lightning strike."
