A former Waverly Health Center nurse who allegely broke HIPAA rules has been denied unemployment benefits and must repay what she received, according to the Iowa Capital Dispatch. Erica Hulsing was fired in May after allegedly informing the family of a 17 year old patient that the girl was pregnant, against the girl’s wishes. Hulsing allegedly told the WHC that she did not realize that was a HIPAA violation. After her firing, she filed for and received more than $4,000 in unemployment benefits. Administrative Law Judge Duane Golden has now ruled that Hulsing was ineligible for benefits due to job-related misconduct. His ruling requires Hulsing to pay back what she received and denies her from collecting more going forward.
