Title: Sentencing for Freedom Convoy Leaders Lich and Barber Today
OTTAWA — Tamara Lich and Chris Barber, leaders of the 2022 Freedom Convoy protest, are set to receive their sentences today. This follows their convictions for mischief related to the protest that blocked downtown Ottawa for several weeks. In April, both were found guilty, with Barber also convicted of counselling others to commit mischief.
The Crown is recommending a seven-year prison sentence for Lich and an eight-year sentence for Barber. Crown prosecutor Siobhain Wetscher emphasized the significant harm the protest caused to the Ottawa community during the July sentencing hearing. She stated that the requested sentences reflect the extensive disruption experienced by residents.
In contrast, the defense attorneys for Lich and Barber are advocating for absolute discharges, which would leave them without criminal records. They argue that their clients have already faced sufficient punishment through three and a half years of strict bail conditions.
The Freedom Convoy, which took place in early 2022, attracted thousands of participants and hundreds of trucks. The movement aimed to lift all COVID-19 public health measures. The protest prompted the federal government to invoke the Emergencies Act for the first time on February 14, 2022, leading to a multi-day police operation to clear the area.
The sentencing marks a significant moment in the aftermath of a protest that has had lasting implications for public policy and community relations in Ottawa.
