A newly elected female mayor has been left fighting for her life after "being stabbed in an attack by multiple men". ‌

Iris Stalzer was found seriously injured by her son in her apartment this morning. The 57-year-old German politician was rushed to hospital where she remains in a critical condition. ‌

As the Mirror reports, Stalzer was discovered at her home in Herdecke-Herrentisch in Germany. ‌

Emergency crews rushed to the scene in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of the country, and treated the elected official for her "serious" injuries.

It is reported that several men knifed the newly-elected German mayor more than a dozen times in the chest and abdomen.

German police have launched a manhunt to search for the politician's attackers. ‌
