KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has issued an executive order requesting that the USDA allow the state to ban the use of SNAP benefits for purchasing sugary snacks.
The order calls on the USDA to allow Missouri to ban the use of SNAP benefits for buying items like candy, carbonated drinks, as well as certain juices and desserts. Gov. Kehoe cites health concerns, including heart disease and diabetes, as reasons for the proposed restrictions.
Governor Kehoe stated, "SNAP benefits issued in Missouri are utilized in a manner that maximizes nutritional health for recipients while also supporting the diverse and abundant agricultural output of our state."
Currently, SNAP recipients in Missouri can use their benefits to purchase a variety of sugary snacks, including candy and
