Handsworth musician Apache Indian hit out at 'irresponsible' comments made by Robert Jenrick and defended the 'culturally-rich' area.

Jenrick visited the area in March to make a video in the early weeks of the all-out Birmingham bin strike and later referenced Handsworth at a dinner event.

In a leaked video, he likened the area to a 'slum' and called it one of the ' worst integrated places I’ve ever been to '.

Real name Steven Kapur, Apache Indian, 58, is a Handsworth local, best known for the song Boom Shack-A-Lak, a No.5 hit in 1993.

He defended the area and said Jenrick's comments 'encourage hate and discrimination'.
