The man arrested last month in a cold case killing in East Hartford that went unsolved for more than 50 years has died in prison.
George Legere, 77, was found unresponsive last Friday around 11 p.m. in his cell at MacDougall-Walker Correction Institution in Suffield, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Correction . Staff performed life-saving measures before Legere was taken in an ambulance to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:12 a.m., the spokesperson said.
The results of an autopsy remain “pending further studies,” a spokesperson for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Tuesday.
DOC officials said their agency as well as Connecticut State Police are investigating the death. Additional information could not be released, a DOC spokesperson
