Steven Gerrard says he ‘hated’ being away with England during his 14-year career with the Three Lions.

The former Liverpool captain represented England at three World Cups before retiring from international duty in 2014.

Gerrard broke onto the scene with Liverpool in 1998 and was handed his first taste of senior international football against Ukraine in May 2000.

He went on to become England’s fourth most capped player of all time with 114 caps; only Peter Shilton, Wayne Rooney and David Beckham featured on more occasions.

But what was always a proud achievement for Gerrard came with its difficulties.
