NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Halloween is just a few weeks away and with all that candy from trick-or-treating, doctors say your child could be at risk of choking.

At the Yale Center for Healthcare Simulation Tuesday, Dr. Seth Woolf demonstrated what to do in an emergency.

He recommends the Heimlich maneuver for children over a year old. For infants under one year, the approach is different. You should use five back blows, followed by chest thrusts- placing your fingers just below the nipple line.

He adds that before starting this process, call 911.

All the techniques Woolf teaches with simulated babies are relatively easy and can be life-saving. Parents are encouraged to take courses through the American Heart Association or the Red Cross. Courses can also be found online.
