US President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump expressed their “sincerest thanks" to families of the Israeli hostages, who are still in Gaza, for recommending him to the Nobel Committee.

In a letter published by the hostage families on Tuesday, exact two years after Hamas led the October 7, 2023, attacked in southern Israel, Trump said he had committed to “ensuring the total destruction of Hamas."

Hamas launched a surprise attack called Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, 2023, which killed about 1,200 people and led to 251 hostages being taken. The attacks triggered a devastating military response by Israel, which killed more than 67,000 Palestinians and reduced Gaza to rubble, leading to a widespread humanitarian crisis.
