The Wilmington City Council is now Republican-less.

Council member at-large James Spadola announced on Facebook on Oct. 6 that he registered as a Democrat "last week." He was elected as a Republican in 2020 and was reelected in 2024.

According to the city charter, four at-large City Council candidates are elected at a time. Any political party cannot nominate more than three candidates. In 2020 and 2024, three candidates running as Democrats ran and won. Spadola finished fourth out of four winners, but first out of the crop of Republicans.
