Cooper Flagg finished in double figures on Monday, helping the Dallas Mavericks to a 106-89 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in their preseason opener.
Flagg produced 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot in the win at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. He went 3-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and was a plus-eight on the court as a starter in 14 minutes of action.
The No. 1 pick, along with the Mavericks' other starters, played only in the first two quarters after sitting in the second half. He looked comfortable on offense, setting up teammates and creating for himself, and had some good moments on defense.
"He was great," Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said. "Cooper did an incredible job for us. He has been doing this for us since training camp started in Vancouver. You got to see the defensive side. You got to see the playmaking and then the scoring ability. I thought he was really, really good tonight."
Flagg arrived in Dallas with tremendous hype, touted as a generational prospect. He has ingratiated himself well within the organization and has impressed teammates and coaches with his on-court play and willingness to ask questions from team veterans.
The 18-year-old seemingly continued that display in the preseason opener on Monday. He had the chance to play alongside several mainstays on the roster, allowing him to build chemistry with his new teammates and play different roles on offense.
Flagg landed in a good situation with the Mavericks, surrounded by a strong support system. After an eventful offseason, Flagg is excited to be back on the court and playing basketball again.
"I had a lot of fun," Flagg said. "This is a great team. We have a lot of really good guys, a lot of great players, but I thought we just played together really well. That is a fun brand of basketball to play when the ball is moving around and everybody has each other's backs. It was fun."
