New Delhi: Manipur’s Linthoi Chanambam on Tuesday created history by winning India’s first-ever medal at the Judo Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru. The 19-year-old judoka claimed the bronze medal in women’s 63kg with a win over Netherland’s Joni Geilen in the bronze medal match.
Chanambam played the bronze medal match in her final Group D match to Japan’s So Morichika. The Manipur girl qualified for the medal match via the repechage route after Morichika entered the women’s 63 kg final.
In the repechage round, Chanambam edged past Slovakia’s Ilariia Tsurkan to set up the bronze medal match against Geilen.
