SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - The mayor of Shreveport is now addressing some concerns about a proposed 2% surcharge on water/sewer bills to address blight in the city, specifically some abandoned apartment complexes.
The mayor’s proposed budget plan for 2026 includes this 2% surcharge, which must be approved by the city council. The mayor says the surcharge would be applied to bills for a period of 18 months. At that point, around $3 million would be raised to tear down some abandoned apartment buildings in the city.
“And so the council can make the decision not to spend this money on that, but if they want to spend this money on the demolition of the apartments, this is the route that we believe we have to go to pay for it,” Mayor Arceneaux said.
The proposal received quite a bit of backlas
