Ohio bill would let expecting mothers use handicap

CLEVELAND (WJW) - Ohio lawmakers are considering new legislation that would allow expectant mothers to use handicap-accessible parking spots.

State Rep. Heidi Workman of Rootstown, a co-sponsor of House Bill 450, said she understands the challenges firsthand.

“As a mother, I know how difficult it can be during those last two, three months of pregnancy,” Workman said.

The bill would give pregnant women the option to apply for a removable windshield placard through the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, with a doctor’s note. The placard would allow them to use designated accessible parking spaces.

"Currently, temporary handicap tags are only available for up to six months — and only in cases of complicated pregnancies," said co-sponsor Rep. Adam Mathews of Warren County.
