OTTAWA — Mutual praise mixed with laughter and predictions of “very happy” Canadians as Prime Minister Mark Carney met Tuesday with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., where the American leader projected friendliness even as he repeated his desire to annex Canada into the United States.

But despite the show of warmth in Trump’s gold-limned Oval Office, the Canadian delegation travelling with Carney ended the day with nothing to show beyond a statement from a top cabinet minister that talks to end the trade war will continue in the hopes of “quickly” striking deals in areas the U.S. has targeted with heavy import duties, including Canada’s steel and aluminum sector.
