NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has ruled that helmets should be made mandatory for both the rider and the pillion passenger on two-wheelers. The bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K V Viswanathan directed all state governments to strictly enforce helmet use through e-enforcement systems, including the use of cameras.

The order came while hearing a public interest petition filed by Dr. S Rajasekharan. The court also asked states to report what actions have been taken — such as collecting fines or suspending licenses — for violations. The matter will be reviewed again after seven months.

The bench further directed authorities to prevent the misuse of high-intensity LED headlights, as well as red and blue beacon lights and sirens. Any illegally sold or used beacons and sirens must be banned,
