**Title: Quinn Hughes Reflects on Growth with Canucks**
Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes is expressing gratitude for the opportunities he has had to develop as a player. Known for his respectful, responsible, and resolute demeanor, Hughes has transformed his role from a defensively focused player to an offensive powerhouse. His evolution has made him a key figure in the Canucks' pursuit of success, especially as the team aims to return to the NHL playoffs.
Hughes is currently in the final two years of a six-year, $47.1 million contract that runs through the 2026-27 season. As the season unfolds, speculation surrounds his future, particularly regarding the possibility of playing alongside his brothers, Jack and Luke, in New Jersey. However, Hughes emphasizes the importance of focusing on his current role and responsibilities.
"Oh, absolutely," Hughes said. "I was drafted here. You want to be the solution and have success. Especially with everything that has happened. You want to bring your best. I don’t know how this year is going to play out with wins and results, but the way we look we’ll be hard to play against."
Hughes believes that his growth as a player is a result of the Canucks allowing him to learn from his mistakes without pressure. "They (Canucks) let me grow and make mistakes and nobody was breathing down my neck. And in the past couple of years, my game has grown to be one of the best," he stated.
Last season, Hughes faced significant challenges, including injuries to his face and hand, as well as a lingering oblique strain. Despite these setbacks, he managed to play 68 games and recorded 76 points, averaging 1.12 points per game. Had he remained healthy, he could have potentially reached 91 points, just shy of the league's top-scoring defenseman, Cale Makar.
Canucks winger Brock Boeser praised Hughes for his competitive spirit and dedication. "He had a lot on his plate last year and there were a lot of people in his ear about certain things. The constant was his play and it was impressive. He wants to be one of the best and when he gets on the ice he’s super-competitive," Boeser said.
Boeser also noted Hughes's strong connections with his teammates and his commitment to the city. "He has a good heart, means well and cares about people. Who knows about his future, but I’m not too worried about it. He has some of his best friends here and a great connection. I believe if we’re super-competitive this year, why would you want to leave?"
As the Canucks prepare for the upcoming season, Hughes remains focused on his growth as both a player and a leader, aiming to contribute to the team's success while navigating the challenges ahead.
