Postmedia gets glimpse into life at the Animal Health Centre at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo

As a registered veterinary technologist at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, Carmen Peccie has worked with all kinds of animals, from tiny reptiles to hippopotamuses. With 31 years of experience — the last eight of which have been at the Calgary Zoo — she’s just about seen it all.

Peccie assists the zoo’s veterinarians with things like anesthesia, radiographs, IVs and blood samples.

“We learn all of those procedures for the different species, which is very unique,” she said. “Obviously, drawing a blood sample from a tortoise is very different than drawing a blood sample from a tiger.”
