A fire at an apartment building in the University Park neighborhood in South Los Angeles left a person dead on Tuesday.
The fire on the second floor of a building at 2353 S. Portland St. was knocked down at about 2:10 p.m., but "while conducting a primary search during their fire attack, firefighters located a victim in the involved unit," the Los Angeles Fire Department said in an alert.
"Unfortunately, the individual was beyond medical help and determined dead on scene," the department added.
That address corresponds to off-campus housing for students at the University of Southern California. It's unclear, however, if any students were involved.
In accordance with protocol for a fatal fire, an arson investigation is underway.
The person's specific cause of death will be determined b
