CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - No matter who you are, there is a good chance everyone knows someone who either battled or is battling some form of cancer.

Inside Karen Nothdorft’s farmhouse, the busy mother of five and grandmother to 12 told Heartland News how her life was turned upside down.

Quiet life on the farm in Cape Girardeau may be what you expect: tractors in fields, a few animals outside and an inviting front porch.

Karen spent 20 years as a registered nurse helping others through the toughest times of their lives.

“I knew plenty about the good and the bad and the ugly of when you hear the words: ‘breast cancer,’” she explained.

In 2011, she would hear the ugly for herself: Stage 0 breast cancer.
