EVERETT, Mass. —

Investigators are treating a Sunday fire in a Massachusetts apartment building as suspicious and offering a reward for tips.

Early Sunday, firefighters responded to the sixth floor of 25 Charlton St. in Everett, where they encountered heavy smoke and an active sprinkler, the Everett Fire Department wrote in a social media post .

On Tuesday, Jake Wark of the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services confirmed several departments are investigating the incident as suspicious.

"It was plumes of smoke and water began rushing into our apartment," said resident Gabriella Cortes.

Gabriella and Josh Cortes said they grabbed a few belongings and rushed downstairs.

They said one of the apartment managers later told them that the fire was no accident.
