Thousands of households from St. John’s to Corner Brook lost their power Tuesday evening.

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, which manufactures about 90 per cent of the power consumed on the island, had a trip on a transmission line. That, in turn, resulted in customers being taken offline to balance system frequency and ensure stability. It’s called “”frequency load shedding” in NL Hydro terms.

The outage affected a wide area of the province including the Avalon Peninsula, the Burin Peninsula, central Newfoundland and Corner Brook and surrounding area.

The outage did not affect all households however, as power was maintained to some pockets.
