Prime Minister Mark Carney emerged empty-handed from a second White House meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump today.

But Adrian Morrow and Steven Chase report that a senior cabinet minister will stay behind to keep talking as Canada hunts for relief from U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos and softwood.

Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade, said at a Washington press conference today that Trump and Carney had tasked him and other Canadian and U.S. officials with “quickly” reaching agreements on steel, aluminum and energy before moving on to other trade issues.
