FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — Fairfield County property tax assessments have gone out, and they’re higher than in past years. The County Council voted late last month to increase the millage rate.

“It’s a permanent solution to a problem that has been critical for a long time,” said Fairfield County Administrator Vic Carpenter.

Property taxes haven’t gone up in several years, Carpenter said.

The new increase raises the millage rate by eight mills, from 178 to 186. Each mill is equal to $4.

That means a $32 increase for every $100,000 in property value. So, if you own $200,000 worth of property, that would be a $64 increase on top of what you are already paying.

Carpenter said the money from the tax increase will be allocated to a new capital fund.
