CLEVELAND -- Cuyahoga County residents should feel confidence about the integrity of the vote-by-mail system in Ohio, even as President Donald Trump signals that he wants to do away with the practice, the county’s elections director said Tuesday.

As early voting began Tuesday for the November elections, Cuyahoga County Board of Elections Director Anthony Perlatti noted that Ohio has built-in safeguards that ensure the system is secure.

Unlike some states, Perlatti said, Ohio’s vote-by-mail process is two-part. Voters must first submit an application, which officials authenticate before sending a ballot. The returned ballot then undergoes another authentication process.

“There’s a lot of integrity in that system,” Perlatti said.
